My Baby Won't Sleep
“My baby won’t sleep!” in one way or another, this is one line that surely millions of mothers around the world have uttered. Babies are very adorable but if they do not have the required sleep they need, they will become very easily irritated, nervous and hyperactive. In the first three years of your child or when he is still considered a toddler, you may notice that most of his time is spent sleeping. Sleeping is very important. Just like adults, sleep allows the body to recuperate ad regenerate new cells which are essential to body development. You may also notice that when babies sleep, there is a point where they become active. They smile or grimace and their eyes move from left to right. This is called the REM or Rapid Eye Movement stage. During the REM stage, the baby digests all the information he encountered when he was awake. This stage facilitates to a healthy brain growth and development.
If your new born won't sleep, there could be possible reasons why this is so. If his sleeping pattern is not normal, then it is best to consult your baby’s pediatrician to rule out other possible underlying problems such as health issues. If the pediatrician has already rules out those problems, then you may try some ways to make your baby sleep.
One of this is by looking at your baby’s diet. Be sure to give your baby a balanced diet. Over feeding your baby is bad to his health that can affect his sleep also. On the other hand, if you do not give your baby adequate food or milk, he may have to wake up in between sleeps just to feed. A disruptive sleep for babies is bad and can even cause other baby or toddler sleep problems.
Another thing to look into is the crib or bed where your baby sleeps. Make sure that it is clean and free from clutter. Make sure that it is well ventilated and free from noise or any other things that can distract your baby’s attention from sleeping. If you think your baby is about to sleep, put him in his crib or bed. It is normal that they do not fall asleep immediately. On average, it would usually take up to 15 to 20 minutes to settle down and start drifting to asleep. If they cry, just let them. It is important at this stage when your baby is about to sleep he is in his sleeping place already. The idea is it that your baby should have the sleeping place in his memory before going to sleep so that he will associate the bed or the crib with sleeping, not you.
